Arkansas Possum Pie
January 4, 2023 - Cafe Connections Story Time -
Many of you are aware of my testimony of being miraculously turned into a baker/cook. Now mind you, and nothing to diminish the work of the Lord, I am still not what you would call a culinary chef, but man have I come along way in the last 11 years😂 My strong suit is definitely NOT found in the kitchen. I actually hate being in the kitchen and would be perfectly fine eating a bowl of cereal or a toasted deli sandwich of some kind, day in and day out. However, Steve does not ascribe to that way of eating.
That's why I find it so funny that since the inception of Cafe Connections, this ministry has always revolved around the serving of food, be it baked goods or a simple home cooked meal. People actually love whatever comes out of my little "easy bake oven" kitchen. Go figure. At the onset, I decided that if God wanted me in the kitchen, then I was going to have fun with it, since that was the place that I least likely wanted to be.
When I started working with food, I was immediately drawn to the most weird sounding names of recipes. Recipes like:
Sad Cake
Too Much Chocolate Cake
Cinderella Cake
Not your Mama's Apple Dumplings
Tornado Cake
Winking Owl Cake
Over the Top Blueberry Bread Pudding
Vinegar Pie
Pinto Bean Pie
The list goes on and on. You know what I found out? Just as much as I was drawn to these weird sounding recipes, so were other people. Guess what happened next? The name of a dessert would always help to start a conversation and lay down roots for the beginning of friendships with the unlikeliest of people. From addicts to wealthy homeowners who live out on the lake. People are people.
Over the course of the years, I have been able to connect with people thru laughter, thru the sharing of their own stories of personal struggle and pain, which leads to heartfelt discussions about Jesus. I have prayed with many, simply because of the funny sounding name of a recipe, which in turn led to beautiful conversations about our Lord.
All that to say this, I found another weird, sounding name of a recipe that I have made and can't wait to see who God brings next to my table of friendship. This is called, "Arkansas Possum Pie". DISCLAIMER - No possum was harmed in the making of this pie.
